An Overview of the GIZ Impact Report; I am describing this Impact Report from an external perspective, as I am not its initiator.
1. Introduction
The Make-IT in Africa initiative, as presented in the GIZ Impact Report 2017–2019, highlights the substantial strides made in fostering technology innovation and entrepreneurship across the African continent. Spearheaded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Make-IT in Africa focuses on creating a supportive ecosystem for African tech start-ups. By providing targeted resources and international networking opportunities, the program aims to help African entrepreneurs transform their ideas into impactful and sustainable businesses.
2. Strengthening Local Ecosystems
One of the standout features of Make-IT in Africa is its commitment to strengthening local tech ecosystems. Recognizing that effective entrepreneurship requires more than just financial input, the program collaborates with incubators, accelerators, and innovation hubs throughout the continent. These partnerships enable entrepreneurs to access training on critical business skills such as financial management, investor relations, and market analysis. Through extensive capacity-building initiatives, local innovators gain the confidence and expertise needed to scale their ventures.
In addition to skill development, the report emphasizes the importance of forging strategic alliances between start-ups, established companies, and public sector stakeholders. Such partnerships help emerging businesses refine their product-market fit, navigate regulatory frameworks, and identify potential growth paths. By involving a broad range of players in these efforts, Make-IT in Africa fosters a more holistic innovation landscape.
3. Start-Up Support and Access to Finance
Make-IT in Africa’s Acceleration Programs have been instrumental in providing tailored mentoring and access to investors. These programs connect start-ups with experienced industry professionals who guide the entrepreneurs through every stage of business development, from prototyping to market entry. The participating start-ups also benefit from pitch events where they can present their ideas to prospective funders, enabling them to secure seed capital or growth investments.
Between 2017 and 2019, numerous start-ups showcased successful fundraising efforts, drawing on tools and techniques gained from the program’s workshops and mentorship. This influx of funding allowed the entrepreneurs to develop critical infrastructure, hire talent, and refine their products. As the report notes, enhanced access to finance not only accelerates product development but also boosts overall business viability.
4. Promoting Gender Inclusion and Diversity
The report underscores Make-IT in Africa’s drive to promote inclusivity in the tech sector. Given that women in many African countries still face systemic barriers to entrepreneurial opportunities, the initiative introduced targeted interventions to increase female participation. These included specialized training sessions, mentorships led by successful women entrepreneurs, and networking events dedicated to raising visibility for women-led start-ups. By prioritizing diversity and equal representation, Make-IT in Africa aims to ensure that the benefits of technological innovation reach a broad cross-section of society.
5. Building International Bridges
Another key focus of the program is creating platforms for knowledge exchange between African innovators and international stakeholders. The report details various networking events, study tours, and conferences where entrepreneurs can interface with investors, corporates, and mentors from Europe, the United States, and other regions. These channels not only help start-ups secure partnerships and market expansion opportunities but also allow them to learn global best practices. Concurrently, international partners gain deeper insights into the African market, paving the way for more meaningful, long-term collaborations.
6. Impact and Future Outlook
Overall, the Impact Report 2017–2019 demonstrates that Make-IT in Africa has played an important role in advancing the continent’s digital economy. Start-ups receiving program support show improved business performance, expanded networks, and greater resilience in responding to market demands. Moreover, the initiative’s efforts to boost female involvement and foster cross-border partnerships are strategically positioning African entrepreneurs for sustained success.
Looking ahead, the GIZ envisions a continued emphasis on inclusive innovation, capacity building, and policy advocacy. By aligning with evolving global trends and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Make-IT in Africa is set to maintain its role as a pivotal catalyst for the African tech ecosystem—empowering entrepreneurs to not only thrive in local markets but also compete on the global stage.
