Mobile phones as a refugee aid

According to the UNCHR, more than three million people have fled since the start of the war in Ukraine. To what extent can digital solutions help support them as they flee and facilitate their arrival in a foreign country?

To answer these questions, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commissioned the ICT4Refugees study, which was developed in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the betterplace lab and Kiron Open Higher Education.

The aim of the study is not only to better understand the needs of refugees, but also to identify possible digital solutions. For this purpose, 108 refugees were qualitatively interviewed and six case studies were developed that illustrate the role that social start-ups, online learning platforms and courses can play in overcoming the challenging living situation.
